Vol. 16

Dear Friends of Bakersfield College,

Even as we enter the summer months, a time for recharging and strategizing for the next academic year at Bakersfield College, I can still feel the adrenaline from May’s commencement activities!  That’s because, for the first time, I had the chance to be part of the “platform party” at BC’s 110th commencement.  What a special experience!

As I’ve said many times, “what you see depends on where you sit.”  Sitting on the commencement stage, as more than 1,600 students each enjoyed their moment in the spotlight, was a highlight of my time here at BC.

Seeing the smile on each graduate’s face was a treasured experience that really cemented in my mind the significance of what you, our supporters, do for our students.  Every single dollar you donate and/or every minute of time you commit to our students helps prepare our students for a successful future.  You help bring their dreams to life.

I’ll never forget the energy I felt on that stage.  I’ll never forget the reason why the BC Foundation exists.  And I’ll never forget that what we do at the Foundation is possible only because of the individuals, companies, and organizations who say yes, I want to help.

Finally, as a friend of Bakersfield College, you won’t want to miss the BC Alumni BBQ and Homecoming, set for Saturday, October 19.  Our Presenting Sponsor is Harris BBQ, so you know the food will be delicious, and the day will be capped off with our Homecoming game vs. Allan Hancock College. I hope you’ll plan to join us!

More than 600 Bakersfield College students have been offered scholarships during our award cycle, representing a total commitment of $520,000 that will support those students in their educational journey. The BC Foundation honored the students’ hard work and dedication with our annual Scholarship Celebration, where students received their medal, which many wore alongside their graduation regalia. As shown in the photos below, many students cherished the moment with their loved ones.

None of this would have been possible without the incredible generosity of our donors, whose unwavering support has made a profound impact on the lives of our students. Donor support serves as a powerful testament to the importance of investing in the next generation of leaders.

We are truly grateful for the support of our community and partners. Together, we are shaping a brighter future for our students and empowering them to realize their full potential. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who have played a part in making this celebration of student achievement possible!

The Bakersfield College Alumni Association (BCAA) made this year’s commencement ceremony truly unforgettable with the innovative “Primp and Pose” station, ensuring every graduate was stage-ready for their moment of recognition on May 10th, 2024. As graduates checked in for commencement, they were greeted by enthusiastic alums who were on hand to assist with last-minute preparations.

The event was a heartwarming display of community spirit, with 10 dedicated Alumni Association Board members plus Foundation staff volunteering time to support the new graduates. These volunteers ensured that every detail was covered, head to toe, from providing bobby pins for securing caps to offering band-aids for any potential blisters. Their presence underscored the tight-knit nature of the Bakersfield College community and the alumni association’s ongoing commitment to the success of future generations.

The 110th graduating class was an impressive sight, with a record total of 1,654 students proudly walking the stage. The “Primp and Pose” station was a bustling hub of activity, filled with excitement and anticipation as graduates received not only assistance but also heartfelt encouragement from those who had walked the same path before them.

The BCAA’s thoughtful initiative added a special touch to the graduation festivities, ensuring that every student felt confident and celebrated as they took this significant step in their academic journey. The Bakersfield College community looks forward to continuing this tradition of support and celebration in the years to come!

My journey at Bakersfield College was truly transformative. A highlight was my involvement in Student in Free Enterprise (SIFE), winning the regional competition and competing nationally in Dallas. This experience not only educated our community about free enterprise but also fueled my passion for community involvement.

What’s intriguing is that my growth extended beyond the business classroom. Professors like Jack Brigham instilled in me a profound interest in our local community and the broader world. Similarly, Gayle Richardson, through SIFE, helped me break out of my shell, sparking an interest in community involvement.

To me, Bakersfield College represents a melting pot of diverse aspirations, all converging towards a shared goal: a college education. The camaraderie among students taught me the value of teamwork and embracing diverse perspectives, forming enduring friendships.

BC played a pivotal role in my personal and professional development, providing experiences and relationships that laid a solid foundation for my future. As a proud member of the Bakersfield College Alumni Association, I am driven to give back, ensuring others can achieve growth more easily than I did.

To current students, I offer advice based on my experiences: embrace challenges and opportunities outside your comfort zone. Build and nurture relationships with peers, professors, and mentors—they are invaluable resources.

Remember, leaders in our community are Renegades, just like you.

In essence, Bakersfield College sculpted me into who I am today. Now, it’s my turn to ensure BC continues fostering education and growth for everyone.
